A Journey through the Shadows of Time

Nov. 24th, 2006

08:12 am - Black Friday

OK, where's my T-Shirt that says I survived Black Friday? I work overnights at my local Wal-Mart. I work from the time they close until they reopen the next morning. Today was different though. Black Friday. Thanksgiving Blitz. We opened early for the hundreds awaiting outside. My job was to help the customers put stuff in their baskets and help load stuff into their vehicles. I knew it would be different than usual but let me tell you, it was downright nuts.

I stood beside the big screen televisions as I knew they would sell fast and the people would need assistance. Our store manager went to the door and told the waiting frenzy that he was opening the store but didn't want to see any running, pushing, fighting, etc. That worked for about fourteen seconds. We had the TVs on carts near the registers in preparation. About halfway to the TVs, the guy in front could no longer contain himself and burst forward in a dead run. Twenty people followed shortly after. We only had five big screens. Mostly they just grabbed the carts (one at each end) but one idiot actually tried to jump on top of one. They started tugging the carts and arguing as to who got there first and such. Me and my crew just started pushing people to the side, letting the folks who had the handle end of the cart get the TVs.

Since the ones who got the TVs were all young guys, we didn't need everyone to help load them. So, I stepped over to the side by the computer display as they were next in line. I moved in to assist one lady with putting one in her basket and I got pinned in by a wave of people moving past. I stood there for maybe five minutes just putting computers in peoples carts. When there was only about ten left, I was finally able to step away.

Someone called me for assistance with something heavy at the other end of the store by Lawn and Garden. But, I never made it. Half-way there, an associate caught me. A customer wanted a bicycle that was hanging up in the top rack. I got it down and luckily the woman was not done shopping yet. I carried the bike up and front and just stood there waiting for the lady to finish her shopping. Of course, then I waited with her in line and then walked her out to her truck where I loaded it up for her.

We opened at five and I got to leave at seven, so it wasn't real bad. Loading, waiting and smiling was about all I did. But I still think I should get a T-Shirt or something.

OK, that was probably not a very exciting entry but I'm still trying to figure out what to write about on here. I'm good at nonsense if anyone wants to hear some of that. Whatever. The Shadow Journey has begun.

07:58 am - Lost in the Fog

It's Thanksgiving Day and I have no idea where I'm at. I'm speaking of this site of course. Is this another social networking site? How do I add friends? And why would I want to? What kind of entries I'm I supposed to make in this Journal? Does anyone actually read these things?

I like blogging, Is this similar? Do I dare tell tales from my darkened past? Or do I invent a character for the forays into the unknown? Time shall reveal all the answers I suppose. Who says rubber balls can't be shiny?

Response needed!
